VSHN.timer #187: Keeping Up with the Kubernetes

19. Jun 2023

Welcome to another VSHN.timer! Every Monday, 5 links related to Kubernetes, OpenShift, CI / CD, and DevOps; all stuff coming out of our own chat system, making us think, laugh, or simply work better.

This week we’re going to talk about how Kubernetes is evolving and adapting to the latest trends du jour.

1. First trend: AI and GPT. k8sgpt is a chatbot filled with SRE experience, ready to scan your Kubernetes clusters and to diagnose and triage issues in simple English. But how to use it? Anais Ulrichs has published a full tutorial video about it.

2. Second trend: Gateway API and Cilium. Managing ingress traffic efficiently and securely has always been crucial. The Gateway API is a long-term replacement for Kubernetes Ingress that brings a wealth of benefits to operators, including role-based access control, portability, and extensibility. This article explains how to use Cilium‘s advanced Gateway API support, today.

3. Third trend: Argo CD. Inspired from Kostis Kapelonis‘ KubeCon talk “How to Preview and Diff Your Argo CD Deployments”, our friends at Puzzle ITC released their own GitOps diff tool called GOFF.

4. Fourth trend: better troubleshooting. Inspired by Daniele Polencic‘s Visual Guide on Troubleshooting Kubernetes Deployments our friends at bespinian created livelint, a CLI linter for Kubernetes deployments.

5. And fifth trend: cost management. OpenCost is a vendor-neutral open source project for measuring and allocating infrastructure and container costs in real time. A tool for times of tight budgets and cloud costs out of control.

What trends are the ones you’re paying the most attention to? Are you already using k8sgpt to manage your clusters? Would you like to share some other recent trend with our readers? Get in touch with us, and see you next week for another edition of VSHN.timer.
