The evening kicked off with an inspiring talk by Urs Enzler, who shared lessons learned from running a time tracking application with a lean DevOps setup: just three developers and two business stakeholders – for nearly ten years!

The panel explored how businesses, politics, and society can jointly develop solutions for digital independence – and how realistic it is to establish Swiss alternatives to global platforms.

This session clearly demonstrated how Switzerland can shape its digital autonomy – balancing regulation, technological sovereignty, and international competition.

While Switzerland – like Europe as a whole – is unlikely to compete directly with hyperscaler clouds or global hardware and chip production in the next 5 to 10 years, our talent, innovative strength, and collaborative spirit can help us build focused, valuable alternatives.

Gerhard Andrey summed it up well – just like Airbus was Europe’s answer to Boeing’s dominance, ambitious visions can succeed when driven by cooperation.

On June 12, 2025, the Swiss cloud-native community gathered at SOHO / Abaton Zürich for Cloud Native Zürich 2025 – and what a fantastic day it was! What a week! KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2025 is officially in the books, and what a fantastic experience it was for our VSHNeers Tobias & Aarno. Hosted this year in vibrant London from April 1 – 4, the conference once again brought together thousands of passionate professionals from the cloud native ecosystem – and we’re excited to share our highlights with you.

A Week Full of Conversations, Community & Cloud Native Innovation

This year’s KubeCon was packed with energy, insight, and inspiration. From the first keynote to the last hallway conversation, it was clear that the momentum behind the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) community is stronger than ever.

At VSHN, we had the privilege of spending the week immersed in a sea of contributors, maintainers, customers, partners, and curious newcomers. We loved catching up with old friends and meeting new faces, all driven by a shared enthusiasm for open source technologies, Kubernetes, and the evolving cloud native landscape.

As a CNCF member, and with Servala, APPUiO and K8up being part of this growing ecosystem, it felt especially rewarding to see how deeply our products resonate with the community.

Representing VSHN on the Ground

Our co-founders Aarno Aukia and Tobias Brunner were on-site, attending talks, talking to interested people at our K8up kiosk booth, and participating in informal meetups around cloud native topics. As we shared in our pre-event blog post, both were eager to connect with the cloud native community.

K8up by VSHN is a CNCF Sandbox Project

One of our key contributions is K8up, our Kubernetes backup operator, which is a CNCF Sandbox Project. K8up helps users automate and simplify backup processes in Kubernetes environments and has gained strong traction across the community. We’re excited to see more and more adopters and contributors join the project – a great example of how open collaboration leads to better, more resilient tools for everyone.

DevOpsDays Zurich 2025, held on March 12-13 2025 at the Alte Kaserne Winterthur, brought together 250 DevOps enthusiasts for two days of insightful talks, interactive workshops, and collaborative open spaces.

The conference commenced with a keynote by Dr. Marc Schuh, who shared his experience in applying artificial intelligence to analyze canoe techniques, highlighting the challenges and successes of integrating AI into sports analytics.

Lena Fuhrimann’s session on “Level Up Your Serverless Game” delved into the evolution of serverless architectures, offering practical advice on optimizing AWS Lambda functions and addressing common challenges such as IAM permission issues.

Christina Kraus discussed building internal platforms to enhance developer experience, emphasizing the importance of clear responsibility matrices like RA(S)CI to reduce frustration among teams.

Daniel Raniz Raneland presented “Pipeline Patterns and Antipatterns,” providing strategies to improve CI/CD pipeline efficiency, such as optimizing task sequences and implementing caching mechanisms.

Robert Lehmann from Google showcased the development of global observability dashboards, detailing the complexities of monitoring extensive internal services and the solutions implemented to achieve effective oversight.

The event also featured Ignite talks, including Sandra Czopek’s engaging session on preventing burnout and fostering motivation, using relatable analogies to emphasize the importance of well-being in the tech industry.

Interactive workshops offered hands-on experiences, such as building secure container images, aligning decentralized architecture decisions through user needs mapping, and domain-driven refactoring to manage legacy code.

The evening event at the Caribbean Pearl provided attendees with opportunities to network, discuss insights from the day’s sessions, and strengthen community bonds.
