Aarno had the pleasure of presenting his view of the cloud at the Glenfis Cloud Talk on Wednesday, 20 November 2019, together with other experts at the Clouds in the Prime Tower in Zurich.
Those who understand the cloud only as an IT topic have already lost
Many companies want to move their IT into the cloud, but how does that actually work? At the Glenfis Cloud Talk, visitors learned from three perspectives how to take advantage of the cloud and how to avoid obstacles. Daniel Wolf (Glenfis), Dominik Zemp (Microsoft), Aarno Aukia (VSHN) and Harald Häuschen (Helsana) gave inputs on the subject of cloud computing. (from left, Source: Network Media)
3 views of the cloud at the Glenfis Cloud Talk
Glenfis has invited to cloud talk in the Prime Tower. High above the roofs of Zurich, visitors learned from three perspectives how the promises of the cloud for more scalability and new business models can be implemented in everyday life.
Perspective one: the expert. After the welcome by Glenfis Managing Director Martin Andenmatten, the first speaker was Aarno Aukia. The CTO and founder of VSHN demonstrated the changes that the cloud makes necessary in a company’s IT operations. Read here how VSHN can offer data center services without a data center.
But first the basic question has to be clarified: Why actually go into the cloud? There are many advantages, said Aukia. But the main thing is that cloud IT can be used to obtain IT – when, where and how you want. Like electricity from the socket, a company can use the services it needs. The cloud operator makes sure that everything works. Usually better than you can do it yourself. As simple as it sounds, however, the use of cloud services is not without its challenges. Aukia said that the cloud can only show its full strength with consistent automation. Security should not be neglected either. DevOps is the ideal operating model. But neither with this, nor with a wealth of tools, migration to the cloud is a sure thing. It also requires collaboration, less silo thinking, training and good leadership.

Presentation From the Road to the Cloud (in German)
The CLOUD 2019 was an extremely exciting series of events for us, which brought us together with various companies in Germany that more or less all face the same challenges. How do I choose Cloud Native? How do I convince traditional IT departments of container technology, Kubernetes, Docker and OpenShift? How can I be faster than my competitors and still trust in the security of my important company data despite using innovative technology? Thank you very much for all the great conversations and some great input, we will be happy to contribute it to APPUiO. APPUiO would like to thank all visitors who visited our booth, all participants and partners and of course the organizers of the Vogel IT Academy, who made the CLOUD 2019 Technology & Services Conference a unique platform around cloud topics again this year! See you next time and many greetings. Your APPUiO Team

Also this year we attended Red Hat Forum Switzerland in Zurich with APPUiO as sponsor and with a booth on site. In 2019 the event took place at StageOne in Oerlikon and the number of visitors this year was even higher than in the last years. About 900 participants found their way to the 8th Red Hat Forum.
Red Hat and IBM
In addition to Open Source, DevOps, Microservices and Containers, the takeover of Red Hat by IBM was of course another big topic that was discussed extensively this year. But both the Red Hat management team and each individual employee are convinced that Red Hat will remain in its current form and that IBM will create new opportunities for them. So far, there have been absolutely no differences in day-to-day business. For Red Hat, IBM is “shareholder and partner at the same time”, which would open many new doors.
APPUiO at Red Hat Forum
APPUiO had a booth on site and were very happy to see many familiar faces again, but we also made many new contacts. Great keynotes and breakout sessions as well as a great ambience made the Red Hat Forum a special event. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the organizers and the super friendly service staff!

There were even red Clouds!
Our latest joint project. APPUiO on Philips. 🙂
APPUiO beerup
After the official part of the Red Hat Forum APPUiO invited to a beerup. The number of visitors was even bigger than last time in Sihlcity – it felt like half of the Red Hat Forum crowd also joined our beerup. 🙂
But only those who were in possession of a golden ticket were let in by the strict admission control. 🙂
In a pleasant atmosphere with many nice people and a wonderful late summer evening we had some drinks after the Red Hat Forum in the Giesserei in Oerlikon and had great conversations. We would like to thank all visitors and are looking forward to the next time! (PS: if you want to have a look at the Red Hat Forum 2018 impressions, you can find our blog post here) See you soon and take care. Your APPUiO team

In a world where software is becoming increasingly important, the success of a company increasingly depends on how quickly software can be developed and deployed. DevOps stands for a new culture and approach in the collaboration of previously separate departments. VSHN at the award ceremony for the Rising Star award Cloud Transformation/Operation Services & XaaS from ISG in Berlin
28. Jun 2019
VSHN receives Rising Star award
VSHN – The DevOps Company receives the award Rising Star of the ISG Provider Lens Switzerland 2019 study at the award ceremony night in Spreespeicher Berlin. We are of course very happy that we were able to place ourselves so successfully in the study alongside many well-known global players from the IT world. The VSHNeers Patrick Mathers (CEO) and Markus Speth (CMO) receive the Rising Star from ISG Director Heiko Henkes and are very pleased about the award.
Heiko Henkes statement about VSHN:
“We have been watching VSHN for several years now and our extensive research in 2019 has come to the conclusion that VSHN can be regarded as Unicorn and one of the most innovative IT service providers in the area of Cloud Transformation/Operation Services & XaaS. As an absolute expert in Managed Services and the operation of modern Container Platforms such as OpenShift and Kubernetes, VSHN supports many companies in an agile and innovative way both in Switzerland as well as internationally with their digital transformation and the implementation of a holistic DevOps strategy. VSHN relieves software developers in their daily work like no other company in Switzerland and despite the size of the company, VSHN is able to manage and scale large and complex projects thanks to sophisticated management & automation.”
Such kind words are of course very nice and at the same time underline our daily work and strategic orientation.
Importance of the award for VSHN
What does the Rising Star award mean for VSHN? On the one hand, the study confirms us in our daily work and in our strategy not to do everything ourselves, but to focus on the operation of modern hosting platforms and future technologies such as Docker, OpenShift and Kubernetes, to automate and to cooperate with partners. On the other hand, the study results also confirm that Switzerland is a multi-cloud country and DevOps is “the way to go”. For this reason, we are extremely happy about the award as Rising Star and see it as a confirmation of our previous path and at the same time as an incentive to become even better in the future.
Berlin is always worth a visit, of course all the more so if you are receiving a prize. Following a few impressions of the ISG Provider Lens Award Ceremony Night 2019 at the Spreespeicher in Berlin on Wed. June 26 2019.
ISG annually awards the Rising Star to the product challenger with the highest potential for the future, which convinces in particular by its promising product portfolio and promising roadmap, focusing on key market trends and customer value. ISG defines the selection criteria of the Rising Star as follows:
“Rising Stars are mostly product challengers with high future potential. When receiving the “Rising Star” award, such companies have a promising portfolio, including the required roadmap and an adequate focus on key market trends and customer requirements. Also, the “Rising Star” has an excellent management and understanding of the local market. This award is only given to vendors or service providers that have made extreme progress towards their goals within the last 12 months and are on a good way to reach the leader quadrant within the next 12-24 months, due to their above-average impact and innovative strength.”

Switzerland is the 6th region in Europe (europe-west6) and the 19th region of the Google Cloud Platform worldwide to offer computing, storage, big data and network services. It is connected to Google’s well-equipped, secure and private network to provide global access to all services of the Google Cloud Platform.
Google is the first Hyperscaler with official Swiss region
Google is the first hyperscale cloud provider with a Swiss data location. The Google Cloud Platform (GCP) with the Zurich region offers services such as compute, data management, app development, storage and much more from the cloud, whereby the latency should be much lower compared to Google’s cloud region Frankfurt.
Launch Event and Google Cloud Services Platform
Of course, this has to be celebrated with a big launch event in Zurich. The VSHNeers are on site at StageOne and follow interesting talks and speakers such as Urs Hölzle – one of the first 10 Google employees – who talks about the Google Cloud Services Platform. With the Google Services Platform (GSP), companies can create their own applications and cloud services that can be operated both on-premise and in the Google Cloud. Other IT professionals from SAP, Google, Credit Suisse and Balgrist University Hospital will be leading the day.
VSHN and Google Cloud / GKE
As the first Kubernetes Certified Service Provider (KCSP) in Switzerland, we are of course already very familiar with the Google Cloud and GKE (Google Kubernetes Engine). We are pleased to announce that Google is now offering a Swiss Cloud. The decision is a very positive statement for the location Switzerland, which makes us as a Swiss company happy and many of our customers have been waiting for. For all those who already work with Google Tools and the Google Cloud, the step of a Swiss Google Cloud is of course very exciting for VSHN as a Managed Service Provider with many Swiss customers. We are looking forward to the further development of how the Swiss Google Cloud will be accepted and how Zurich will continue to assert itself as a European IT heavyweight in the international environment.

Container Stack 2019 at FIFA World Football Museum Zurich
On January 30th and 31st 2019, the Container Stack, a two-day event on Kubernetes with one day of workshops and one day of conference, took place for the first time at the FIFA World Football Museum Zurich. VSHN was co-sponsor of the event.
Led by industry professionals, the conference brought together users and representatives of the ecosystem and the CNCF community. A good mix of user reports from experts from the pharmaceutical, banking, media and research sectors, as well as representatives of the global Kubernetes and CNCF ecosystems, presented their experiences and approaches to the challenges of large native cloud architectures.
Impressions from Container Stack
Experts from the fields of Networking Layer, Storage Layer, Packaging Layer and Professional Services have shared their know-how and brought their global expertise closer to the audience. Our VSHNeers were also there and our Head of DevOps Tobias Brunner held a Lightning Talk on Kubernetes Distributions.
Tobias Brunner: Kubernetes Distributions – The road to production
https://speakerdeck.com/tobru/container-stack-lightning-talk-kubernetes-distributions The following speakers attended the Container Stack: Sebastien Goasguen from Triggermesh.
Between the Container Stack Workshop on Wednesday and the conference on Thursday, VSHN organized a Knative CNCF meetup at short notice. Mark Chmarny (TPM Serverless, Google) and Sebastien Goasguen (Founder, Triggermesh) spoke about Knative, the Kubernetes framework to build, deploy, and manage serverless workloads. Impressions including a video recording of the meetup can be found here.
Conclusion Container Stack 2019
The VSHNeers were enthusiastic about the first edition of the Container Stack. Exciting talks, top speakers and an interested audience. In any case, we would be happy if the Container Stack would take place again next year. Many thanks to the organizers.
What is Kubernetes and who is CNCF?
After Linux, Kubernetes is the largest open source project in the world and the de facto standard for container orchestration and the management of distributed applications. Kubernetes automates the setup, operation and scaling of containerized applications and is a project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). VSHN is the first Kubernetes Certified Service Provider (KCSP) in Switzerland.

Aarno's Transformation Talk at Inside Channels Forum 2019
4. Feb 2019
Inside Channels Forum on Jan 31st 2019
On Jan 31st 2019, the Inside Channels Forum 2019 with the big players of the Swiss ICT industry took place in the Kultur- and Kongresshaus in Aarau. VSHN was there and our CTO Aarno held a Transformation Talk.
Channel-Transformation 2019
The Inside Channels Forum 2019 was dedicated to the topic “Channel Transformation”. The ICT industry is undergoing radical change both worldwide and in Switzerland. Previous businesses are disappearing or becoming smaller and all players must become more agile. ICT service providers, cloud providers, resellers, consultants and system integrators must adapt to the changing requirements of the market. The Inside Channels Forum 2019 addressed the question of how companies can be made fit for change. In the completely filled hall, future topics such as artificial intelligence and digital transformation were discussed.
VSHN at Inside Channels Forum 2019: Aarno’s Transformation Talk
VSHN was also there and Aarno Aukia, founder and CTO of VSHN – The DevOps Company, gave a transformation report speech with the topic: “How we made the entry into the IT business with DevOps, Cloud and Docker” (in German).
Below is a recording of Aarno’s Talk. Have fun watching.
Many thanks to the organizers of the Inside Channels Forum

Between the Container Stack workshop on Wednesday Jan 30th and the conference on Thursday Jan 31st 2019, we organized a Knative CNCF meetup at VSHN. Mark Chmarny (TPM Serverless, Google) and Sebastien Goasguen (Founder, Triggermesh) spoke about about Knative, the Kubernetes framework for building, deploying, and managing serverless workloads.
Despite the short notice (we planned the meetup 1 week in advance) we had a full house at VSHN. And with all the people on the waiting list, we could have filled the room almost twice.
Watch the recording
But for those who couldn’t join the meetup, we recorded the talks with an introduction to Knative, demos, and the Q&A session. Have fun watching.
Thank you for a great CNC meetup
Many thanks to all attendees and especially to our speakers Mark Chmarny and Sebastien Goasguen for their great talks and their short term commitment.
