VSHN at the Google Cloud Switzerland Launch Event

12. Mar 2019

Google Cloud Switzerland Launch

Switzerland is the 6th region in Europe (europe-west6) and the 19th region of the Google Cloud Platform worldwide to offer computing, storage, big data and network services. It is connected to Google’s well-equipped, secure and private network to provide global access to all services of the Google Cloud Platform.

Google is the first Hyperscaler with official Swiss region

Google is the first hyperscale cloud provider with a Swiss data location. The Google Cloud Platform (GCP) with the Zurich region offers services such as compute, data management, app development, storage and much more from the cloud, whereby the latency should be much lower compared to Google’s cloud region Frankfurt.

Launch Event and Google Cloud Services Platform

Of course, this has to be celebrated with a big launch event in Zurich. The VSHNeers are on site at StageOne and follow interesting talks and speakers such as Urs Hölzle – one of the first 10 Google employees – who talks about the Google Cloud Services Platform. With the Google Services Platform (GSP), companies can create their own applications and cloud services that can be operated both on-premise and in the Google Cloud. Other IT professionals from SAP, Google, Credit Suisse and Balgrist University Hospital will be leading the day.

VSHN and Google Cloud / GKE

As the first Kubernetes Certified Service Provider (KCSP) in Switzerland, we are of course already very familiar with the Google Cloud and GKE (Google Kubernetes Engine).
We are pleased to announce that Google is now offering a Swiss Cloud. The decision is a very positive statement for the location Switzerland, which makes us as a Swiss company happy and many of our customers have been waiting for. For all those who already work with Google Tools and the Google Cloud, the step of a Swiss Google Cloud is of course very exciting for VSHN as a Managed Service Provider with many Swiss customers.
We are looking forward to the further development of how the Swiss Google Cloud will be accepted and how Zurich will continue to assert itself as a European IT heavyweight in the international environment.

The VSHNeers were enthusiastic about the first edition of the Container Stack. Exciting talks, top speakers and an interested audience. In any case, we would be happy if the Container Stack would take place again next year. Many thanks to the organizers.

What is Kubernetes and who is CNCF?

After Linux, Kubernetes is the largest open source project in the world and the de facto standard for container orchestration and the management of distributed applications. Kubernetes automates the setup, operation and scaling of containerized applications and is a project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). VSHN is the first Kubernetes Certified Service Provider (KCSP) in Switzerland.

Our VSHNeer Peter spoke about DevOps & how to develop software today.

You can view the slides of Peter here:

Conclusion

DevOps was number one topic at FutureStack18. Software development and operations today simply have to work hand in hand to meet dynamic and agile demands.

The reports of the various cloud journeys and experiences of the speakers, how they migrated from monolithic applications to cloud architectures and how to save time and money from the very beginning of the development through good monitoring were extremely interesting.

Many thanks to New Relic for the successful event, the exciting talks and the opportunity to hop into the flight simulator. We had a lot of fun!

Thank you very much and see you next time.

Open Source Monitoring Conference 2018

14. Nov 2018

Our Marco Fretz has visited the OSMC (Open Source Monitoring Conference) 2018 in Nuremberg and reports his impressions below.

The OSMC 2018

The four-day OSMC with around 300 visitors is all about monitoring tools, concepts and the automation of the monitoring system. Of course, Icinga2 is very well represented – in the talks, among the participants and organizers. The conference is organized by NETWAYS, the company behind Icinga2, and takes place annually at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Nuremberg.

On the first day there were workshops on various topics and on the fourth day a hackathon, with projects that were determined spontaneously. The English and German talks took place on the second and third day and were divided into three tracks. Thanks to the agenda (online, in front of the rooms and at the back of the badge), it was usually easy to decide on the most exciting track. Talks that you missed can be watched later online as video.

I only visited days two and three again (with the talks). With around EUR 1500.- for two days conference, three evening events and three nights in the hotel, the conference is also very attractively priced.

In any case, the OSMC is also known for the rich and excellent catering (all-you-can-eat) from breakfast to the evening events and the smooth organization – the hotel and conference check-in are completed in under a minute. This has come true again this year.

More impressions: #OSMC

Highlights

For me, the most important thing was to meet new and familiar faces and the related exchange about their own and other monitoring landscapes including their problems and solutions as well as, of course, the direct line to NETWAYS / Icinga. Thanks to the talk from @ekeih (scaling Icinga2 …), some people quickly found themselves running Icinga2 in a setup similar to ours.

Prometheus

Exciting talks about Prometheus or concepts that rely on Prometheus made me feel that Prometheus is becoming more widespread, not only in the “cloud native” world but, for example also for HTTP SLA monitoring (MORITZ TANZER, nic.at), network monitoring (MATTHIAS GALLINGER, ConSol), etc.

Our current plans at VSHN for the integration of Prometheus into our monitoring environment were thus confirmed.

IcingaDB

A big bottleneck in Icinga2 and Icingaweb2 is the IDO database (MySQL / Postgres), whose schema dates back to the Nagios and Icinga1 era and has been steadily worsening over time. At that time, a relational database for actually volatile status information such as service and host states, etc. seemed to make sense. In larger setups, however, the writes from Icinga2 to the DB are the bottleneck. Also, the query performance of Icingaweb2 suffers greatly in certain configurations for larger setups.

A lot of details are not yet known, however, Redis is used for the volatile status information and a SQL DB for the historical data. A first version already runs on a trial basis at Icinga and was presented in a live demo. I think it’s great that you can probably use the IDO DB and the IcingaDB module in parallel (transitionally), the same applies to the Icingaweb2 monitoring module – this will greatly simplify migration.

To take away

Try it out…

OpenAPM

OpenAPM is not a tool in itself but shows in a simple way which tools can be combined with each other to build an application performance management / monitoring landscape. Just try it here: https://openapm.io/landscape

Maps

Certainly exciting are the maps for Icinga2. You can give each host or service object the geolocation via custom variable, then they are automatically displayed on the map and grouped according to the zoom factor: https://github.com/nbuchwitz/icingaweb2-module-map

Rancher Monitoring

From the talk of @ClaudioKuenzler a plugin for easy monitoring of Rancher2 and Kubernetes: https://github.com/Napsty/check_rancher2

Conclusion

I have taken great ideas with me, met new people, ate a lot (and yes, the gin was good too (big grin)). A great conference that’s really worth it. I like to go again.

VSHN Mulled Wine Party 2018

9. Nov 2018

Despite pretty mild temperatures, we cheered up the mulled wine season 2018 on our roof terrace last night together with our partners and friends.

You don´t often see people drinking mulled wine wearing T-Shirts.  But let’s not complain, the cold is sure to come. 🙂
In a very pleasant atmosphere, we enjoyed fine mulled wine, punch with various mixed drinks and delicious chestnuts and had lively discussions until late in the evening.
A big thank you to all who passed by last night. As always, we were very pleased to welcome you all in a relaxed environment. Since pictures are more than words, here are a few impressions from yesterday’s event:

Since the year is not over yet, we do not wish you nice holidays for the time being, but would like to draw your attention to our upcoming events: On Nov 22, for example, the next Cloud Native Computing Meetup in Zurich takes place – we would be happy to welcome you there too! All other events can be found under Events.
Many thanks to everyone and see you next time!

Wir waren dabei – DevOpsDays 2018

14. May 2018

Neue Features

Spannende Kundencases
