What is Kubernetes?
Kubernetes is an open source system for automating the deployment, scaling and management of container applications and is the de facto standard in cloud orchestration.
Kubernetes (also known as “K8s“) is the platform for automated deployment, scaling and maintenance of application containers on distributed hosts. Kubernetes is a portable, extensible open source platform for managing containerized workloads and services that facilitates both declarative configuration and automation. It has a large, rapidly growing ecosystem. Kubernetes services, support and tools are widespread.
A number of container tools are supported, including Docker. Kubernetes orchestration is supported by leading cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, IBM Bluemix, Red Hat OpenShift, Amazon AWS and Oracle OCI.
So Kubernetes is a platform with countless expansion possibilities and not a ready-made product off the shelf. A Kubernetes distribution e.g. is OpenShift from Red Hat or SUSE Rancher. An extensive article with many more details about Kubernetes can be found here.
